My experience in the internship

Hi!! I’m Monica, I’m 19 and I’m from Madrid, the capital city of Spain. I arrived to Brighton two week ago I started working in Nvisage this Monday.

I’ve studied a vocational training of administration during two years. I decided carry out this kind of studies because I didn’t know in that moment what I wanted to study, and this program offered me to learn quickly theoretical and practical aspects about Human Resources, Management, Project, Finances, Account, Audit, Typing, Computer applications (Microsoft Office, account programs,…) and Marketing; so I thought It could be a great idea. But the aspect I liked the most was after finish the course in the college I had to do an internship in a company during three months, and I could do it in a company of England, Ireland or Prague, if I wanted. If I would chose to do the internship in a foreign company, I had to pass all my exams before the second evaluation because my college had to ask for an Erasmus grant. The Erasmus grant is a scholarship for university and college students to work or study in a European country.

In that moment I understand that if I wanted to do the internship in a foreign country, I had to improve my English level; so I enrolled in an English study centre and, after the first year of my course, I travelled to London two weeks with some partners of college in a vocational training travel that the school organised. During the stay, I visited some companies that had a relationship with my college to do internship; included Stages, a Brighton Study Centre that organises work emplacement and home-stay for students in work practise in Brighton and Hove (mine too).

At the beginning, I wanted to do my internship in Prague, but one month before start the internship, I decided to come to Brighton. The mean reason to change my work emplacement was that the company in Prague that I liked It didn’t want to integrate students till September, and the other company was OK but I had to be alone in a flat so I though that It was going to be boring and I wanted to talk with people and friends in English too, no only in the company.

I think the most important thing for me to do an internship in a foreign company is to learn English, because the companies value English certificates, experiences in an English country; and in the most of the jobs, it’s necessary to speak fluently English. But there are other important reasons, like to know about other cultures, meeting new people, personal growth, to be more independent and to learn about how the foreign companies work.

I think it’s a really good idea that the companies integrate students to work three months. It’s an experience for a company because they can teach students how to work in a company before they look for their first job, which gives prestige to the company. In addition, I think the companies can discover new cultures and other ways to do some things and they can integrate to their way of working. Another positive point is that the student is going to help the staff to carry out some projects.

Two weeks ago arrive to Brighton, my college organised a meeting with the Erasmus students to inform us about our emplacement. I shocked when I saw in the paper that I was going to work in a web design company because I had studied Administration. But after I realised that all the companies have their own management area and I didn’t mind to learn about web design at the end, because I like to know about all kind of subjects.

Finally, I arrived to Brighton. Here, I’m learning about other lifestyle because they drive on the left side, they have dinner and go to sleep really soon for me, and they speak a language that’s not my native language. But I think I’m adapting so fast.

The first two weeks I was studying in an English school to improve my English a little bit before start in Nvisage. I visited the company the Thursday before start my internship and all the staff were really kind to me and they asked me what things I wanted to learn. I was very happy because I didn’t expect that they were going to be so close to me. Now, I have been worked three days and I think this experience is amazing. The staff has a lot of patient with me, they want me to integrate in their team and if I find out someone in the kitchen or in the corridor they stop and start to talk to me, they are teaching me about web design too and they order me to do tasks that help them, and I think at the moment they are happy with my work. All this aspects motivate me and make me feel really comfortable with the situation.

I think now I‘m enjoying of the studies I did because when I started the college two years ago, I realised that it wasn’t going to be as easy as I though. It has been two difficult years where I learned about a lot of aspects of life, because I don’t know how to explain but….Do you know when you think that one day someone is going to tell you that a hidden camera has been recording you all the time like in Big Brother because you feel like a “survivor”? Yes. I know it’s funny but I didn’t feel comfortable with some things that I was experiencing. But months after I realise that all those bad experiences was teaching me about bad aspects of life to grow myself and to know that I couldn’t act in that way never and I changed my attitude regard the things I didn’t like it. So I started to be more relaxed and to be more patient, and suddenly I realised that the internship was around the corner and all the things that I was learning about life I was going to put in practise. And this is what I’m trying to do! So I encourage students and companies to participate in this kind of programs, it’s a really important opportunity!

Guillaume has passed the Google Analytics Qualification!

Our in-house SEO Specialist and Digital Marketing Manager Guillaume Busetto has this week taken and passed the Google Analytics Individual Qualification Exam, and we’d like to wish him a big congratulations!

Guillaume has been working towards this qualification using Google Analytics IQ Lessons and passed his exam on Sunday. The questions spanned a wide range of topics including Tracking Methods, Regular Expression and Conversion Optimisation. We are really pleased with his achievement and Guillaume himself can’t wait to put some of his hard work into practice!

New Starter @ NVisage: Chris Lewis

Chris Lewis joined us this week as a Designer in Sandra’s team. Chris has a background in both print and web design and brings a wealth of experience to our creative department. With a BA Hons in Graphic Design and key skills including concept creation, logo design, Adobe CS4, HTML, CSS, typography, illustration & Photography, Chris is well placed for a successful and prosperous time at NVisage.

He will be working closely with Sandra in all aspects of design and we are truly pleased to welcome him  here at NVisage.

Ada Lovelace Day

Wednesday 24th March 2010 was the second annual Ada Lovelace Day, a day to celebrate and dwell on the significance and contribution of women within technology.

Here Dru Moore our Technical Director takes the opportunity to reflect on the wonderful work being done at Nvisage by our own team of ‘Ada’s.

We’re very lucky, and sadly still quite rare in this industry, to have a pretty much even split of genders across all aspects of our company - from board level, through project management, business analysis, visual design, sales and marketing and ultimately right down to the code level. So here’s my personal thank you for another year’s involvement from:

  • Nicola Harding & Rachel Etherton two fantastic coders. It’s always a pleasure to work with their SQL, c# or Perl code as I was particularly reminded at the end of the week. They’re a core part of my team and as programmers particularly important this week.
  • Kate Fargher our business analyst and all round critical thinker.
  • Lucy Hilditch who’s shown us very quickly how effective she can be at keeping us all on track.
  • Danita Jackson whose tireless efforts help keep the food on our plates.
  • and of course the truly amazing and talented Sandra Staufer, Creative Director and warm heart of the company.

There are of course countless others whose work with or for us is equally important but I wanted to focus on the women who enrich my work life on a daily basis.  And for those that are interested, my own personal heroine would have to be Delia Derbyshire a true pioneer of electronic music.

Ryan is taking part in the London Triathlon

One of our star developers Ryan is taking part in this year’s London Triathlon and will be raising money for MacMillan Cancer Support.

The London Triathlon takes place on 8th August and is the Olympic distance  of a 1 mile swim, 42km bike ride followed by a 10k run. Ryan and Mart both took part in 2006 and Ryan will be aiming to beat his previous time of  2hrs 49mins. If he doesn’t we wont hear the end of it from Mart who is still bitter about being beaten back in 2006! That said I don’t see Mart in too much of a hurry to sign up for this years event!! ;)

MacMillan Cancer Support is a fabulous charity who do a great job looking after families and people who are affected by all types of cancer, more information on them can be found here.

Website launch for the Brighton Festival Fringe 2010!

A big congratulations to the Brighton Festival Fringe who have just launched their new  and improved Website and Brochure for this years festival. Dru and his team have been working hard on this years launch and we’re really proud of the outcome!
Aside from a beautiful modern design from our wonderful design team, new functionality to the website include:

  • A greatly improved listings search called Fringle - We’d always had a powerful search engine in the site but it wasn’t something users felt comfortable with. So this year we’ve put it front and centre and focussed on usability using a 3 stage search component, simple text box (keyword search), advanced options (calendar, genre and predictive event and venue searching) and even more options for those who like to tinker - all presented in such a way as to let the user determine their needs and level of comfort.
  • Pushing data out to even more external sources. We’ve always enabled Brighton Festival Fringe to get the right data out to third parties to help promote the festival - but this year we’ve added iPhone services, bus companies, box office systems and even more sites to the mix.
  • We’ve been building on past experience and as the core registration system matures (the back-end) we’ve been able to take on-board a lot of user feedback into making enhancements, improvements and generally streamlining processes where possible. Everything from financial reporting, proofing and brochure preparation, enabling external applications and box office integration, through to the web site front-end and ticket buying processes are now all powered by the same data systems behind the scenes.

Year on year we are helping Brighton Festival Fringe  to make real world cost savings and to reach out further to disparate audiences by getting the technology platforms right in the first place.

The Brighton Festival Fringe runs from 1st -23rd May with events happening all over Brighton, so don’t miss out!!

Newly Certified Ektron CMS400.NET V8 Developers

Ektron is one of the most widely used content management systems (CMS) but few developers have in-depth knowledge of how to get the most from it. That’s where we come in - we were one of the first adopters of Ektron in the UK and consequently have a wealth of experience of all versions and features of the Ektron products from the last 7 years. As one of only 3 Gold partners in Britain We have more experience than any other UK developer and as such invest a lot of time in getting new members of the team up to speed with the how to use Ektron and get the most from out of it.

True to our word, two of our recent recruits Rachel and Justin have just returned from a four day Ektron Developer training Course and are now both certified Ektron CMS400.NET V8 Developer’s – Congratulations to both of you!!

In what follows, Justin summarises how his week went and what he feels he has got out of the course:

With a background in programming bespoke applications, I approached the training keen to understand NVisage’s drive behind their partnership with Ektron and it wasn’t long before this became increasingly clear.   V8 offers an impressive wealth of content management and web 2.0 functionality and makes light work of implementing website fundamentals such as taxonomy and URL aliasing.  There’s little that Ektron doesn’t already do, and for that, there’s its comprehensive API - the possibilities are endless. I’m really looking forward to putting this training to use and can’t wait to get cracking!

New Starter @ NVisage: Justin Evans

Justin joined NVisage today as a Developer in Dru’s team. Justin has worked in a mixture of industries and environments including financial and HR software departments & web marketing agencies. He has over 10 years experience in full lifecycle development of web and online applications ranging from public facing websites, to intranets & enterprise products, as well as 2 years commercial .NET experience.

Justin has joined at an exciting time for us and we have plenty for him to get stuck into - not least a four-day Ektron Developer course next week in Maidenhead; the lucky, lucky thing!

We are really pleased to welcome Justin to the NVisage team, and  are looking forward to getting to know him in the months ahead!

New Starter @ NVisage: Lucy Hilditch

Lucy Joined NVisage today as a Project Manager. She will be working with Martin Janes to cover the project management needs of our clients going forward. We are really focused on improving this critical area of our business and this will help enormously.

Lucy comes from a background of both web and print project management so that’s going to stand her in great stead with our client list.

We’ll keep you updated on her progress but we are looking forward working together and her becoming part of the team.

Google: from timeline search to real time search, a natural progression.

On Google Twitter agreement

Google has recently announced on their official blog an agreement to “include their updates in our search results”. This comes just after Microsoft’s Bing adding a beta search for Twitter only. This confirms that both engines move forward and emphasise real time search results.
It seems to me like a natural progression, Google started by getting closer to the timeline search. Early on, Google released two search functionalities:
