When you're letting UK property, it's critical that you obtain a 'landlord electrical certificate' for each property. It's important that you get this electrical certification carried out by an electrician registered with the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installers and Contractors (NICEIC).
More about NICEIC
Whilst NICEIC enrolment is voluntary, the bulk of professional electrical contractors will make the effort to enrol with this reputable organisation. NICEIC contractor assessment involves inspecting samples of a contractor's work, equipment and premises, the documentation they use as well as supervisory staff competence. Once contractors become registered with NICEIC, they get re-assessed regularly to ensure their updated compliance.
NICEIC focuses on the safety and technical standards of electrical work carried out by Approved Contractors, and certification standards and regular inspection reports which Approved Contractors are responsible for delivering.
As 20,000 contractors are registered with NICEIC across the UK and Northern Ireland - this means that you're sure of a choice of competent contractors operating where you let your property. And you may also be interested to know that it's thought that 90% of UK Local Authorities will only work with NICEIC Approved Contractors because of important safety implications.
NICEIC complaints procedure
Furthermore, the Council offers an independent complaints procedure that governs technical standards of electrical installation of Approved Contractor and Domestic Installer Schemes. Put simply, should the electrical work of a registered contractor be found to be below the accepted technical standard, NICEIC will take responsibility for making the specified contractor correct their work, at no extra cost to customers.
