Is your keywords density too high?

A quality search engine optimisation programme relies upon a number of factors to achieve good search engine rankings. One of the important factors in letting a search engine understand what you web pages are about is Keyword density. However, this aspect of optimising websites is not taken as seriously as it should.

What Is Keyword Density ?

Keyword density is the measurement of how frequently your keywords should appear in the web page. Remember, the density is PER WEB PAGE, not per web site. It is denoted as a percentage, calculated on the basis of the number of times the page displays your keywords and the total number of words in the page. Let's say, you have 200 words in your webpage (excluding the HTML code of your page). Your keyword occurs 10 times in the page. Therefore, the keyword density here is 5 per cent. This is calculated by dividing the total number of keywords by the total word count in the particular page. Therefore, in this case, we divide 10 by 200 and get 0.05, i.e., 5 per cent.

The Lesser, The Better

The optimum density for any web page should be between 3 and 7 per cent. Many website owners think that the more often the keywords are repeated, the higher it will be ranked in the search engine. THIS IS A WRONG ASSUMPTION. If the keywords in your web page are repeated too often, then the search engines believe that you indulge in "keyword stuffing" and can penalise you for that. Keyword stuffing is considered a type of spam.
The best thing to do is maintain a balance between the number of words in your page and the number of times you insert the keywords in the content. With the right balance, you can get an attractively worded web page and also guarantee your web page on the search engine.
